Tshegofentse Training Academy is an accredited training provider focused on delivering occupational based training mainly in the chemicals and water industries. We understand the current challenges in our country and believe that our training interventions make an excellent contribution towards addressing youth unemployment and skills development.
We are focused on the transfer of technical skills in the critical sectors of our economy such namely the Chemicals Industry and the Water Sector. This role however requires us to work in partnership with private and public organisations with the same vision and mandate. One of the first exciting projects that deepened my understanding of the training landscape was Discretionary Grant award for a Learnership and Work Integrated Learning (WIL) awarded to us by Chieta in 2014, see attached picture. Through this award our company conducted a learnership which involved enrolling 5 learners to Chemical Operations L1, offering them in-class training, paying them stipends and then afterwards placing them at companies whose operations fulfil the practical requirements of the qualification. These were Ecolab and Reba Chemicals.
We are grateful to these companies for being willing partners to facilitate skills transfer and provide unemployed youth with work exposure. Albeit temporary, these leaners got an opportunity to be exposed to real chemical industry, to interact with other people in a workplace and to gain valuable knowledge and insight. Private companies use learnerships as a trial period for choosing future employees as well. At the end of this learnership some leaners were absorbed into full time employment.
Learnerships are very beneficial in today’s environment of high youth unemployment, we need more and more companies to take on learnerships. The key role players in a learnership are the Training Provider, the Seta or funder and the Workplace offering the practical skills. In addition to the learnership award we were awarded a Work Integrated learning grant by Chieta, this enabled us to take on 2 chemical engineering students from Vaal University of Technology and pay them monthly stipends for 8 months. A small business like ours benefitted a lot from such support, hance we were able to bring in the students, train them and assign them to some of the projects we were doing.
There was mutual benefit for both parties, our company and the students. I will encourage many large and small businesses in South Africa to take on learnerships, internship and WIL projects as they will go a long way to uplift many out of poverty and give them much needed skills and exposure. Call us now for assistance to execute or setup such a system in your company or we can also help you apply for Seta Discretionary grants.
